Handbook Educates Citizen Journalists

E-book was written to motivate and train aspiring and practicing citizen journalists who are rising to the occasion to keep their communities informed.

PARKER, CO, January 31, 2010 /Journalism and Writing PR News/ -- The "Handbook for Citizen Journalists," an all-encompassing e-book for current and aspiring citizen journalists, is now available.

The handbook was written by the Colorado co-founders of the National Association of Citizen Journalists, Ron Ross and Susan Carson Cormier. The e-book is a continuation of their efforts to educate and support citizens who want to cover the news in their communities.

In the book's introduction, Ross and Cormier call for one million citizen journalists from around the world - in communities large and small - to step forward and fill the gap left by fading newspapers and weakening local broadcast news teams.

They note that the work of the citizen journalists will be varied in kind, quality and usefulness; nevertheless, their efforts will be part of the changing way the world gets its information.

The e-book encourages its readers to rise to the challenge to cover everything from a women's knitting group, to a Little League baseball game, to the governor's talk at a business gathering, to the city council or the birthday of a 100-year-old woman.

This handbook also provides a skills section, which offers basic instruction on how to write a news story, as well as a resources section, which lists the many resources that are available to help citizen journalists.

Among the other topics covered in the e-book are: The similarities and differences between citizen journalists and professional journalists; the differences between accidental journalists, advocacy journalists and citizen journalists; six questions to ask yourself to determine if you have what it takes to be a citizen journalist; and lessons on how to write features and sports stories, conduct interviews and edit yourself.

For more information or to order your copy of the e-book, visit www.citizenjournalistnow.com or call the NACJ at 720.242.5987.
